The outer, middle, and inner ear are the three components that make up your ear. The OAE test is used to determine how well your cochlea, or inner ear, functions. OAEs, or otoacoustic emissions, are measured. These are the sounds that the inner ear produces in response to sound. The inner ear contains hair cells that vibrate in response to sound. A very soft sound is created by the vibration and echoes back into the middle ear. The OAE being measured is this sound. You will create OAEs if your hearing is normal. You cannot make these extremely delicate noises if your hearing loss exceeds 25 to 30 decibels (dB). This examination might also reveal whether your middle or outer ear is blocked. No sounds will be able to reach the inner ear if there is a blockage. This implies that there won't be any vibration or reverberating sounds. Your ear is fitted with a tiny probe, earphone, or both. Your ear is stimulated by the probe, which then measures the sounds that emerge. During the test, there is nothing you have to say or do. Results are shown on the monitor for the test-taker to observe.
